I used to consider Mother’s Day one of the Consumer Extortionist Observances, along with Valentine’s Day and Father’s Day. You know, those holidays when the jewelers and confectioners and florists and greeting card companies and Old Spice all band together to let us know that our love can be best expressed through one of a few culturally-sanctioned purchases.
But after reading this article: One Thing They Aren't: Maternal in the New York Times, I realize that Mother’s Day is appeasement, pure and simple. And it is so worth it.
So on Sunday, be sure to thank your mom for employing a strict — but not too strict — K-type reproductive strategy.
Because it could have gone another way.
